60-second interview with Tammy Weis…

‘Where I Need To Be’ is the brand-new album from Canadian-born Kensal Riser, Tammy Weis. Released this week, it’s a personal reflection of the jazz singer’s life in London having relocated here from her native Vancouver.

Does the spirit of jazz live in NW10? It certainly does in my flat…

What brought you to Kensal Rise? I was living in North London and a musician friend knew of a flat available and I loved the neighbourhood!

If Kensal Rise was a jazz standard which one would it be? ‘On the Street Where You Live’

What’s the jazziest establishment in Kensal Rise and why? The gift shop Rise plays a lot of jazz and has very cool things and Minkie’s Deli – they have had live jazz.

If you had to duet with another local resident who would it be and why? Joseph Dean Osgood – he has a lot of soul that one!

What’s your ideal way to spend a day in your neighbourhood (OK, enough jazz references…) A class at the Special Yoga Centre followed by a massage with Alison Durant (Clifford Gardens) and then a banoffee pie at Kandana (Kilburn Lane,  W10; 020 8964 8800).

Forthcoming gigs include 7 March at the Hideaway Club, Stanthorpe Road, Streatham SW16 (020 8677 7791); 18 March at Pizza on the Park, 11 Knightsbridge, SW1 (0845 6027017)
