Roy Scheider. Unlikely fashion hero. With his tanned, craggy, leathery nappus, the actor as Martin Brody, Chief of Police for Amity Island in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’, reminds me a bit of my friend Chris. Turns out they also have quite a similar fashion sense. I’d never noticed this until I started my online image search for Scheidshanks in preparation for this post. Keyword search terms included ‘Chief Brody style’ (interesting Urban Dictionary results), ‘Chief Brody aviators’, ‘Roy Scheider short shorts’, ‘Roy Scheider espadrilles’, ‘Jaws Brody rollneck’ and a few others which have spiced up my search history. I couldn’t actually find any pics of him in shorts or those espadrilles, but I definitely remember him working that look in either I or II.
Why write about Roy Scheider’s short-shorts? Well, from a cinema content point of view, everyone knows what happens in ‘Jaws’, and that it’s really a coded response to the terror of the unknown and unseen enemy permeating the American subconscious in the context of the Vietnam war, and that there’s a strong post-Watergate subtext running through the narrative in the portrayal of a corrupt, insensitive administration and its impact on the hard-working, honest everyman of small town America. But how much attention has been given to the Chief’s hardworking wardrobe?
Given the prevalence of fashion posts recently on this wonderful little blog, it makes sense from a marketing perspective to attempt a little cross-pollination and invite all you style consumers to approach cinema from a different angle. The Flicker Club makes a nice backdrop for this too, what with the cocktails, celebrity guests, goodie bags and animal handlers – it’s almost a fashion show in itself. So enjoy a little taste of Roy below. I’ll see if Chris can make it…
Khaki creases: so hot right now
