Kensal Flea won’t just be in the Paradise pub on Saturday, it will be in the grounds of this rather special church, too. The £1 entry here will go to its charity the Women’s Refuge in Marylebone.
St John’s likes to call itself the ‘First Church in the City’, considering its location right on the brink of Westminster, and straddling three London boroughs…
As you stand in the sun at Kensal Flea this Saturday (yes, SUN – we’re glass-half-full peeps at Park Life HQ) after popping to the Paradise to select a sublime summer hat from Suzanne Bettley (whether to rival Princess B is up to you), come eat, drink, shop and mingle at this very special church. You’ll also be able to pop inside for a cup of tea, and find out more about the wonderful work they do in the community.
The church has stood here for 167 years, and has even survived to tell the tale of an arson attack in 2004. St John’s the Evangelist boasts a ‘small yet vibrant’ congregation representing many ages and nationalities. Delightfully it hosts ‘a good number of old Kensal Green folk’, who have lived there their whole lives, as its charming, welcoming Reverend Andrew Dangerfield will tell you.
A hub for friendly locals and a kind-hearted community the church hosts a monthly service for the ministry of healing, while the Saint John’s Guild for the Blind has a thriving branch there.
St John’s, Kensal Green’s very own answer to Cologne Cathedral, is certainly iconic to this blogger. It’s the building that nods familiarly whenever you pass, confirming that you’re on the home straight, five minutes from that cup of tea, knowing that all that’s left of the journey is that familiar cruise up Chamberlayne Road.
St Johns Church Kensal Green is at the bottom of Kilburn Lane on the corner of Harrow Road… Join them on Facebook.
