Cupcakes and macaroons and tarts – oh my!

by Lauren Rayner on July 24, 2011

La Dinette, a heavenly local cake delivery company and star of the last two Kensal Flea events at the Paradise, specialises in mouth-watering treats reminiscent of those found in tucked-away Parisian patisseries.

Talented pastry chef Claire Jury (trained at London’s Cordon Bleu), whips up her exquisite home-made creations from her kitchen in NW6 for special occasions and events across London. (If you didn’t sample one of her delicious macaroons at the Flea then you haven’t lived!)

La Dinette is the culmination of the classic desserts of Claire’s childhood in France, which she spent playing ‘á la dinette’ – a French word which describes the small kitchen utensils and toys a child uses when pretending to cook, and the sweets of her life in the UK.

A scrumptious addition to parties or events that crave a little je ne sais quoi, Claire is happiest taking on the more usual orders: French specialties such as financiers, macaroons or croque-en-bouche, just to whet the appetite…

Her most popular treats are macaroons (“It took me a few months to nail them!” she says), and raspberry financiers – little almond cakes with raspberry. And we must mention her delectable Guinness and chocolate cake with cream cheese icing… c’est délicieux! And soon to come to the ever-expanding list of treats on her website include the Paris-Brest (a wheel-shaped choux pastry filled with praline cream) and mini pavlovas. Is your mouth not watering just imagining them?

And we challenge you to find another pastry chef in London selling savory cakes – a spécialité française. Claire often sells them in local markets; “and while they may sound strange, they taste great!” she says.

La Dinette supplies delicious treats to a couple of cafes in the local area and is on the waiting list for the Queens Park farmers’ market (watch this space) – but the best way to get your hands on one of Claire’s creations is via her website www.ladinette.co.uk (delivery is free if you’re a local!). And make sure you like La Dinette on Facebook for updates and more tantalising temptations!
