Kensal Flea IV: Photobooth Out of Order

by Lauren Rayner on October 29, 2011

We have something special in store for the next Kensal Flea on 12 November – a 3D photo studio where you’ll have retro-inspired portraits taken in a bespoke Flea setting… All in aid of charity, too.

Jon X and Rita of Photobooth Out of Order have built weird and wonderful photobooth sets for some of London’s trendiest events. Whether it’s a glamour factory for the National Portrait Gallery, a wolf-drawn sledge in a snowy wood for X-Factor, or a decadent boudoir for The Nomad’s screening of Breakfast at Tiffany on the lawns of Hampton Court Palace, all the sets are tailor-made to an individual theme.

Jon and Rita are busy concocting the set for the Flea. ‘It will be eccentric, vintage and a little bit crazy as always,’ Jon hints.

Photobooth Out of OrderNeed a bit of help channelling your inner vintage glamour? Dressing up always helps to create an exciting photo, Jon advises (and there’ll certainly be plenty of vintage outfits to choose from at the Flea), and Rita will be on hand to choreograph your pose.

We’ve also enlisted the lovely makeup artist Natasha Devedlaka to make sure you look the part (keep your eye on Park Life for more info on Natasha).

Photobooth Out of Order uses no green screens, digital effects or post-production – all the effects are real – resulting in realistic images with visual impact.

So far, partygoers at different events have survived Mad Max-style apocalypses and Roswell-esque alien abductions. They’ve posed as Arabian sultans and as avatars in magical forests. But the most bizarre set up so far, Jon says, is a Lost-inspired airplane crash – ‘Strangely enough a very popular set!’

Photobooth Out of OrderThe best thing about doing such a job, Jon says, is ‘making people come out of their shells – and their reactions when they first view their photos!’

How did it start? ‘Back in the day Rita was a wedding photographer and I was DJing in the underground clubs,’ Jon says. The pair’s first ever photobooth was a themed set for the Last Tuesday Society, photographing the event’s ‘fabulously, flamboyantly, eccentric guests’.

‘The combination of our bizarre, abstract sets featuring the guests’ creativity and eccentricity was a hit!’ Jon says.

So start planning your outfit for your very own vintage portrait at the Kensal Flea on 12 November. And then make a generous donation to the Lexi Cinema’s Sustainability Institute in return for your portrait!
