Pop-library Kensal Rise Library

Wow. The community support for our beloved library is staggering. It’s a Hollywood plot: just when you thought the campaign had received the final fatal blow, Margaret Bailey, David Butcher and their Save Kensal Rise Library comrades devise another spanner in the closure works and keep the dream alive…

The Pop-up Library remains open seven days a week 9am–5pm thanks to the support of volunteers who have been turning up and for the donations of books and plants and the general love that is being directed at the library.

If you can spare a couple of hours, please sign the roster at the library (‘Tweed skirts and twin-sets not essential,’ says Margaret.)

Take a few minutes answering this survey – that too would be a great help – the aim is to demonstrate to Brent Council how local people feel and persuade them to revisit their decision.

Latest news? ‘At Cllr Powney’s surgery yesterday,’ says Margaret, ‘The lead member responsible for libraries was asked why the council who are closing Willesden Library so that the site can be redeveloped did not use Kensal Rise until the redevelopment was complete – instead of all these temporary libraries in varied places plans they have.

‘He said Kensal Rise would be too far to come to. Yet part of the rationale for closing Kensal Rise library was that it was easy for people in Kensal Rise to walk to Willesden.

‘So I guess Kensal Rise is closer to Willesden than Willesden is to Kensal. Calibre of our councillors is remarkable.’
